More than 60 Local Organizations Attend "Wind Supply Chain Workshop"
They Learn About How to Capitalize on Burgeoning Wind Energy Industry

11/10/2009

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – November 10, 2009Representatives from more than 60 local organizations attended the "Wind Supply Chain Workshop" presented by Greater Rochester Enterprise and the Great Lakes WIND Network™ today . The half-day workshop helped local companies find out more about how to capitalize on the rapidly growing wind energy industry, which is expected to generate $60.8 billion in revenue by 2016. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates wind power could generate 20% of the United States' electricity supply by 2030.

"An innovation based economy thrives on diversity," said Greater Rochester Enterprise President Mark S. Peterson. "Today's workshop provided local manufacturing companies with the information they need to balance their portfolio by expanding into the wind energy market, positioning the Rochester Region as a key supplier of the growing production of wind turbines. "

Attendees learned more about how to connect with the wind industry's key players to gain new business opportunities from producing the numerous parts that make up a wind turbine. The workshop also examined current global trends driving market demand and detailed the components needed for a successful wind supply chain structure.

"The Rochester Region has a precision, high-quality manufacturing workforce that has the capacity to support the pent up demand that exists in the wind energy sector," said Gleason Works Director Specialized Gear Services Bruce Hayward.

In 2007, the world's total installed wind capacity grew by 27%. The United States has led the world in new wind turbine installations the past two years.
